Nintendo has a number of great franchises that don't see sequels as often as Mario, Zelda, or Metroid to name a few. Here are five series that need a new entry.

Nintendo tends to put a lot of care into its homegrown franchises, and rightfully so. Series such as Metroid, Mario Kart, Fire Emblem, and The Legend of Zelda are all acclaimed franchises, and they often deliver some of the best gaming experiences on Nintendo’s consoles. Still, there are a few brands Nintendo doesn’t seem to be following up on. Here is a list of five Nintendo franchises that desperately need a sequel.

Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong hasn’t seen a proper sequel in a few years, and the powerhouse of Jungle Japes seems to be but a mere addition to all the sports and party games under the Mario license. And while games such as Jungle Beat and Jungle Climber are good additions to the DK series, it would be great to see Donkey Kong in a game similar to Donkey Kong Country or Donkey Kong 64.

Word has gotten out that a new DK 64-like title is being talked about over at Nintendo, but nothing has been officially confirmed just yet. Hopefully the rumors are true. Donkey Kong has a loyal following, and a new game in the series is definitely something longtime fans would appreciate.

Yoshi’s Island/Yoshi’s Story

Yoshi hasn’t starred in a game in quite some time, and it would be nice to see the fruit-eating, egg-tossing dinosaur in an all-new game (as the main protagonist, not Mario’s stallion). The Yoshi franchise manages to capture the charm and fun gameplay of the Mario series, but it often has a different feel to it due to different mechanics. A new Yoshi game would be a nice change of pace from the latest Mario games.

Kirby

Nintendo has many beloved mascots, and the pink Kirby is definitely one of them. Known for its engaging side-scrolling action, the Kirby series would benefit from a sequel. A GameCube Kirby game was announced years ago, and then it was said to have switched platforms to the Wii. Shortly after, it was cancelled. If Nintendo manages to resurface the title or create an all-new Kirby game from scratch, gamers will undoubtedly watch for it.

Star Fox

One of Shigeru Miyamoto’s many impressive creations, Star Fox gained a following after its debut on the Super Nintendo. Miyamoto has stated that he is upset about the Star Fox series not being as popular as some of his other creations, and many fans have stated that the reason for their lack of interest in Star Fox is due to the action-adventure entries in the series, Star Fox Adventures and Star Fox Assault.

While those games received much praise, die-hard fans were upset about the change in genre for the series. Perhaps a new release in the same vein as the original Star Fox, Star Fox 64, and Star Fox Command is what Nintendo needs to get the fans interested in the series once again. It would definitely be a welcome addition to the Star Fox series.

Mother/Earthbound

The Mother series (Earthbound in North America) has gained a large cult following due to its humorous tone and excellent RPG gameplay. While creator Shigesato Itoi has said that Mother 3 is quite possibly the last game in the series, fans have often stated that they want a fourth installment.

The last game, Mother 3, was originally planned for the Nintendo 64, but it was moved to the Game Boy Advance. Only the second game in the series was released in North America, and gamers who played it enjoyed the game wholeheartedly. If mention of Mother 4 is ever made by Itoi, then fans will have something special to look forward to.

5 Nintendo Games in Need of a Sequel

Nintendo tends to put a lot of attention into its popular franchises. There are few, however, that don’t get that same amount of attention. This has created a cult following for titles such as Earthbound, Star Fox, Kirby, Yoshi’s Island, and Donkey Kong. If Nintendo ever releases proper follow-ups to any of those games, then fans will be in for a real treat.

Well, Yoshi's Island DS wasn't terrible. I personally don't think it was as awesome as the SNES one, but I'm pretty sure it's considered a sequel.

Very true, but it has been over three years since the release of that game. Certainly many people would want to see a new game starring Yoshi by now. Thank you for your input.

Yoshi's story and super mario world were both good games. As was donkey kong 64. I'd like to see these games be followed up on the next gen system.
